Context. On Saturday evening at Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis, a tornado warning siren was sounded. Convention patrons were urged to take shelter. A number of events were disrupted, including a downpour of rain which revealed leaks in multiple ceilings. While no tornado materialized during the event, attendees took to social media, talking about their experience. Some humorously marked themselves safe from the Gen Con tornado. As it had become somewhat of a short-lived meme, I got struck with inspiration to write a tongue-in-cheek alternate history of events to a cartoonish degree, also using the opportunity to make geek-related and convention-related jokes.

This is a work of FICTION. All information inside this article is a SATIRE, and not to be taken seriously. Honestly this was my first time writing satire. It will be funny to some, unfunny to others. Note it is not my intent to be crass or mean-spirited; this was written in a playful spirit for those who wanted to take the meme further. Read. Comment on Bluesky. Enjoy.

On Saturday, August 1st 2026, during the festivities of Gen Con 2026, a natural disaster fell upon the event. As a tornado warning was sounded, attendees of the hobby gaming celebration rushed to various parts of the convention complex to protect themselves from possible harm.

Sadly, while some have reported the warning to be a mild inconvenience, and falsely posted “I survived the Gen Con tornado” on social media, the truth is much darker, and destructive. A massive funnel cloud the size of a city block descended upon the city of Indianapolis, centralized on the convention complex.

Very few survived the destruction, but reporters on the ground caught much of the chaos in action. We at Odd Fair Press were fortunate to capture some of the most intense moments of the disaster, and provide those accounts to you now in this article.

(Content Warning. The events you are about to read may be disturbing to your comfort zone and gamer sensibilities.)

Tornado Destroys Hobby Gaming Convention

Starting with a drastic leak in the exhibition hall ceiling, and a warning from weather experts, the event appeared to be off on a shaky foot Saturday evening. Then, all hell broke loose.

An F5 tornado of immense power touched down in the center of the exhibition hall, immediately collapsing the ceiling, and tearing through stalls, game tables, and crowds of people.

“It was intense!” one gamer said “For a brief moment while playing Warhammer 40k, I was about to be wiped out by Ultra marines, but I sensed something was wrong. So, I decided to channel my inner ork and called upon all of my boyz to blow air out of their mouths at once, and just like that, the Ultra marines were gone, and my opponent was hanging from the rafters.”

As streams of people were sucked up into the funnel cloud, never to be seen again, staff and contractors found themselves grabbing desperately at their stalls.

In the Marriott, consignment and auctioneer patrons were ripped from their places, forced to fight each other with plastic swords and light sabers mid-flight to grab their coveted items on discount before they blew away.

In the Lincoln meeting room, a band of Daggerheart players had believed to have rode out the chaos.

“The doors flew open, and we panicked. We managed to watch the tornado move away from the Marriott to a big sigh of relief, just before one of the GMs shouted “I USE A FEAR TOKEN!” and the f—ing tornado came right back towards us. Desperate players threw Hope tokens and attempted anime-style tag team rolls against the tornado but immediately got sucked up into the sky.”

Meanwhile, in the Hilton and JW Marriott, scores of people rushed from the lobby into the various meeting rooms. Away from windows, and with the incoming funnel cloud, everyone took shelter. One eyewitness described the chaos.

“The entire top of the hotels, all 20-some stories, started peeling away floor by floor. My friend on the ground who couldn’t get to safety in time watched as everyones personal item were scattered to the wind. Cosplay outfits. Commander decks. Packs of Monster energy drink. Uncrustables. Greasy pizza boxes. And a TON of sweatpants!

Reporters also noticed from the aftermath a scattering of personal items all across the streets surrounding the hotels, but also a distinct lack of deodorant.

One attendee in the vestibule between Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center whose entire body was completely covered and pierced by exclusive event pins from other attendees backpacks exclaimed in glee “The whole thing was fantastic! I really made out this year with my pin collection, and I didn’t even try!” … just before passing out due to blood loss.

The Great Trading Card Debacle

However, the worst damage was done in the trading card game sections of the convention. With an immense about of cards flying through the air, gamers were sliced repeatedly by papercuts. Amongst them, one Lorecana player witnessed a bunch of Magic Brooms rush at them led by a Mickey Mouse, Playful Sorcerer just before passing out. “It was strange. It all happened in slow motion, and for some reason, I remember hearing a thrum of clarinets, strings, and oboes in the background while it was happening.”

Another reported running away as a number of Naruto cards pursued them through the hallways, only barely making it out alive by channeling their inner 2015 meme energy and running with their arms behind their back to go faster.

The tornado also struck the card city sculpture in the east side of the convention center. Sadly, we weren’t able to get any comment from those near, as everyone in the vicinity of the trading card city was sliced to death by spare land and energy cards.

Fortunately, everyone at the Asmodee publisher section was safe and sound, and enjoyed their Star Wars Unlimited experience happily and undisturbed, possibly due to their multiple Star Wars licenses with Disney/Lucasarts enabling latent Jedi powers. … While a few trading cards were unfortunately lost, they were only common storm trooper cards which promptly managed to miss everyone.

And Then The Water Came…

A flash flood took over the food truck area as tacos, poke bowls, and award-winning noodles rushed down dangerous urban rapids.

Hotbox Pizza, a famed recurring vendor, reported watching as the incredibly long line for their pizza vanished at once under a tidal wave of water. This years pizza flavor was Dragons Luau, which included spicy red sauce, spicy pepperoni, bacon, mozzarella, a drizzle of Mike’s Hot Honey, and pineapple. The press was unable to get comment from any anti-pineapple purists as they were all washed away into a nearby manhole never to be seen again.

(Update: one of our writers wishes to express their sorrow that this disaster didn’t happen last year as, with last years pizza flavor, it would have set up the opportunity to call the disaster “Chili Con Carnage”. )

In the Lucas Oil Stadium, a deluge of water poured into the arena, creating a deadly vortex of flailing bodies and Magic the Gathering cards in the midst of what was supposed to be a championship match. While there were several survivors, an immediate breakout of seppuku followed suit at as they realized the amount of money lost invested in their hobby. Their funerals have been scheduled, with attendance of other patrons of expensive games, including members from the miniatures communities X-Wing, Warhammer 40k, and Marvel United.

Meanwhile, those still outside who survived the flash flood and tornado were treated to a stunning pre-programmed display of drones lighting up the sky making up images of various renown and beloved Dungeons and Dragons icons just before those drones went haywire and promptly started attacking everyone in the city.

(Despite repeated attempts, Vecna was suspiciously not around for comment.)

Meanwhile, at the Dungeons and Dragons Tower

Various Dungeons and Dragons players rolled critical misses at the precise wrong moment as the tornado pulled them up from their seats. Players went missing all at once as the entire DnD Tower was lifted off into the sky. Gamers, dungeon masters, performers, staff and more were seen falling from great height across the convention complex.

Tragically, no scrolls of Feather Fall were in possession.

Many survived the fall. However, few Dungeons and Dragons patrons were noticed falling into any of the areas where other TTRPGs were being played. Event organizers theorized that the phenomenon was easy to explain, as those players and dungeon masters were naturally repelled by the idea of playing a game system that wasn’t Dungeons and Dragons.

One DM who did manage to fall in one of the open play areas was witnessed becoming so inspired that they grabbed a notebook and started writing ideas. While encouraging to other gamers, they quickly became disappointed to learn that he was homebrewing those ideas for DnD, and refusing to p any of the other games.

One Call of Cthulhu game master noticed the players notes on sanity mechanics and immediately screamed out in cyclopean anguish, while a Blades in the Dark player was seen scornfully throwing a clock at them on their way back to the tower. Pathfinder GMs were conveniently silent during the whole scene.

Wizards of the Coasts recent announcement was of both sorrow over the losses within their community, and excitement at their new IPs coming to the Dungeons and Dragons property.

A few survivors of the drop were requested for comment, but were recovering from concussions from the fall. One suffering gamer was caught mumbling under their breath that they had ceased playing World of Warcraft years ago, while another appeared to be suffering from double-vision after witnessing a table playing Star Wars: Edge of the Empire just before WOTC made their announcement.

However, most players took the announcement quite positively! … One patron who was in the midst of playing Magic the Gathering with decks filled with Expanded Universe cards was so excited at the announcement concerning World of Warcraft and Star Wars based DnD that he immediately started flossing in the street. He was last seen at home playing Fortnite.

Sifting Through The Wreckage

Players, emergency services, and more did their best to recover what items were left. Unfortunately, large swaths of the debris were unidentifiable. Some were so destroyed, mashed up, and merged together of other peoples personal items that some of the attendees took those piles home and attempted to sell them as “original” “art”. The sellers were last seen going on tirades online, calling their detractors “luddites”, and being strangely retweeted by out of touch CEOs.

Despite the chaos, some stalls and patrons enjoyed the fiasco. Acheron Games, publishers of Helluva Town, the bonkers looney-tunes inspired RPG, felt very much in their element at that moment, and were busy taking notes for an upcoming expansion.

Members of the Modiphius sales team had woken up from an unconscious state quite delighted. They reportedly determined that the whole thing was a surprise Gen Con advertisement for their Fallout games, and immediately started wandering the post-convention wasteland, fending off rad-roaches crawling out from the ruins of the exhibition hall bathrooms.

The Free League team had concluded similar concerning their new Invincible TTRPG, but were sad to miss out on any actual superhero sightings, instead mistaking surviving cosplayers battered amongst the rubble. However, the tornado did somehow manage to uplift and send a subway train filled with people careening into a statue of Omni-man and Invincible. All witnesses of the collision have been reported to have contacted their therapists.

Chaosium team (of Call of Cthulhu franchise fame) managed to capitalize on the moment, finding an opportunity to console their Free League neighbors. Someone nearby claimed to have seen a tentacle peak out of a Chaosium staff members cloak, and its been reported that Free League is down one member since the conversation, and a new Chaosium devotee has been sighted speaking in tongues.

An Insidious Coverup

Some question about the happenings of this years Gen Con, and wonder why these events have not been picked up by news media. Very little has been reported truthfully to the media, and some suspect a coverup of the events by a cabal of event organizers and publishers.

In fact, upon questioning the reports of an uneventful evening, Odd Fair Press received multiple warnings themselves, aiming to suppress the truth from being revealed. Our organization has refused to comply with these warnings.

This is why it is important now more than ever that you support independent media!

If YOU have reports from Gen Con 2026 about the true ongoings of the event during the tornado attack, OR enjoyed this innocent little poke at the gaming scene, please provide a comment on our Bluesky.

Whew! I dont often get inspired to write satirical posts, but I felt a burst of goofy energy on my drive back from Gen Con, and noticed the Tornado Warning was still getting chatter, so I thought it would be fun to create an alternate version of events as a basis for humor. Honestly, I respect all groups or brands poked at in my article, so please dont be too mad. … Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed at least a few seconds of laughter.
